How to unblock your drain

Buy some big gloves, a set of drain rods at least 10 metres long, suitable manhole keys for the drain covers on your property and a head torch. Disinfect everything once you have finished poking about. (See also: How to Sustain a Successful Relationship and Ultimate Best Makeup Tutorials)

Here follows some additional wizdom, collated from the World Wide Web:

There are four rules for successfully unblocking a drain. Never, ever think about what the effluent actually is. Always wear sturdy rubber gloves that can be washed after the deed is done – you will be handling rods that have ventured deep into the blockage. Stand well back – it can be a bit splashy when the drain gurgles with relief and starts to empty.  And, most important of all, remember to always turn the rods the same way so they don’t unscrew in the drain.  (

In a dry sink, pour at least 1 cup of baking soda down the blocked drain, and ensure that the powder makes its way down the drain. Next, pour approximately 2 cups of boiling water in and wait several minutes. Add one more cup of baking soda in and immediately follow it with one cup of plain white vinegar. (}

And finally, a word of warning…

Manholes are very dangerous places as the gasses they contain can be overpowering. Do not go down into a manhole without someone at the top to make sure you are ok…. Sounds very silly in your own back garden, but professional builders have drowned in manholes because they were overcome by the fumes. (
